Blackbear

Blackbear is a theme I am developing for hugo. When I first started to think about it I pictured a background of a blackbear staring off into the distant forest, which is how I came by the name. I envisioned a minimal theme that is just that: minimal. That was the extent of my mental requirements. Sadly, requirements like these will not do.

Since then, my requirements have evolved. I want to attempt to do something I have yet to see: high quality across the board. This means that the components that comprise this template should provide the tools to make a site for the modern internet which I will describe in the next section.

Requirements

1. The site is well structured, meaning proper use of semantic tags.
2. It’s simple, meaning it only uses what is needed and what is available.
3. Easy to read.
4. Accessibility tags are applied.
5. SEO tools are used
   • Structured data (i.e. json-ld)
   • The opengraph protocol
6. Responsive
7. Support various content types.

In addition to the reasons I stated above, I just haven’t seen many options out there for static site generators that offer all of these things. Maybe it’s just that I haven’t looked hard enough. Regardless, I just want to add at least one option that attempts to provide the elements to be visible on today’s internet. Perhaps I’ll fail, but I’ll learn a lot in the process and that’s all I could ever hope for.
