Prepping

I like being prepared. For some reason I have always found that preparing or “prepping” gives me a lot of peace of mind. On the off chance that I mention this to people, often I’m greated with awkward caution. As if they have realized that they are dealing with some sort of crackpot. I don’t believe I am such a person. Then again, I am me so of course I would say that.

When I talk about an idea like “prepping” I am really referring to general preparedness for the unexpected, not armageddon. While I’m sure, at some point, armageddon could happen. I don’t think it’s very useful as a target for preparedness. For several reasons. Most of which I won’t get into. The important reason is “armageddon” is pretty nebulous. What does the armageddon even look like? If you can’t answer that, how can you prepare for it? It is much more useful to prepare for things that could actually happen: civil unrest, natural disasters, pandemics, home invasion, etc. Two of these have happened to me (well, many people) recently at the time of writing. Heck, even more mundane things than them. Simple things like serious injury. Do you have bandaids? or more serious bandages?

Is that so crazy? To want to be ready for one of the things I listed? I don’t think so. Sometimes I wonder what America would be like if a core value of ours was being prepared? Granted, I’m very confident I am not the only person in America who likes being prepared. Sometimes it feels pretty niche, though. Regardless, this won’t stop me from trying to prepare myself.

I hope this shines a little light on mentality of “prepping” and makes it seem a little more sensible.
